Finding Your Niche: Just How Important It Is To Business

By:

Youve been in business for long that you can spot a competitor long before they put up their business. But what if the new competitor that you have been shrugging shoulders for a while now arguing that they wont stand a chance with your well established business has been stealing your business and your customers? Do you continue turning a blind eye on them? Do you do something to keep them out of your nose? What chance do you have against a fresh business that looks so enticing to your target market? What can you possibly do besides going out of business?

This situation of big and new businesses taking over old and small store is actually now something new. For years, shopping centers have been taking business away from small shops that have been serving the town for decades. Department stores have been doing it for long now. Fast food restaurants have gotten rid of lunch counters. And the general stores have taken away sales from the specialized product vendors. Thats how business is done today. Everything is centralized. The bigger the business is, the cheaper their products or services are.

All these will obviously hurt your business. So, what can you do stay afloat in this kind of industry?

Well, have you seen the specialty poultry products sold at supermarkets? Ever receive those postcards that say they specialize in party packages or they serve purely sea foods or ethnic foods? These are businesses that have established their niche in the market. In fact are some businesses that are so widespread and successful that they are no longer regarded as niche businesses. The trouble is that these niche businesses are taking your customers away from you and killing your business slowly.

In this situation, what you can do is to take a closer look at your business. Do you think establishing your own niche would help your business? So if you run a pastry shop, should you focus on cakes or breads? If you have a boutique should you sell clothes catered to the younger generation or the old, 40 to 60 something age group? If you have a restaurant, should you focus on offering sea food dishes or Chinese cuisines? Its important that you take a look at your prospective customers. Determine if they want to patronize special products or services. After that, study the competition. What can you offer your customers that your competitions dont offer?

Keep in mind that large scale business establishments cannot always provide everything to their customers. They cannot provide the table that some customers want for their house, cannot stock the books students need, and cannot have all the expertise to provide customers the best print job for their postcard printing. At most, their specialty is to provide popular products at the lowest price possible.

Now, this leaves a space available for you to conquer. All the specialty items big businesses cant offer is a good place for your business to triumph over. If you are able to pick the right niche, the specialty products or services you offer can give you a lot of profit and sale. In fact a lot more than what the big businesses get.

Remember that you are the connoisseur in your business. So, study it and take a look at what you can do to improve it. Focus your niche and you are sure to reap the rewards taking a leap.
