Finding Where Smoke Is Coming From And Getting Rid Of The Smell

If you were standing inside your home and you smelled smoke, what would you do? If asked most people they would not be able to really give you an answer and if they did it would probably be I do not know. The best thing would be to shut down your main breaker box and start checking your plug ins, electrical cords, and even your electric appliances. If you should come across one that smells like smoke, then this needs to be thrown out. Make sure that you cut off the cord to this item before it is left in the trash. Some people will go through trash to find things that they might be able to use. If the cord were to be left on, they might take this item and try to use it in their home where it might start a fire.

When outside and you smell smoke, check the horizon to see if you can see signs of a fire. In most cases the smoke or fire might be far enough away, but the stronger the smell, the closer it could be. If the wind is up, this smoke could get into your home and cause damage. In most cases of smoke damage it is not noticeable until later. If the smoke is close, the damage from it could be heavy. Sometimes you can smell smoke before you see it. Smoke can seep into your heat and air ducts, your insulation and will even settle on anything in your home.

In severe cases, a professional cleaning company might have to come in to remove the smoke residue. They will have all the tools to do this job and do it right. You can get some residue removed, but you just do not have the right tools or equipment to do it right the first time. Most people would not even think about their ducts on the inside of the home or even their insulation. If you do not have these places cleaned you will still smell the smoke because it gets into the fibers and can stay there for years. You will also need to get a professional company to come in to clean your carpets. These will also hold the smoke in their fibers.

Your carpets can hold the most toxic of these fumes in their fibers and just vacuuming them will not remove this. They will have to be deep cleaned with special cleansers to remove these odors from your carpet fibers and then totally dried before you can even walk on them. If your carpets are old and they have bald spots, then it will be better for you to just have them removed. Then it would be up to you if you want new carpets or leave them bare. Some people decide that they like the look of wood floors so you might want to have them install this instead of carpets. In some cases it might be cheaper than new carpets.
