Finding Water Damage And Mold During Home Renovations

By:

If you live in an older home and have begun renovations that uncovered mold, then you might have started a project that is bigger than you first imagined. If you bought an older home and plan to do renovations, hopefully the home was inspected well enough that any mold has already been uncovered and you know what to expect. Remodeling in a home is stressful and when you run into unexpected complications like water damage and mold, it adds more work and more costs to the project. These are the renovations where you are likely to run into these issues:

Bathrooms are commonly remodeled and if you are going to find water damage and mold, this is a great place for it to be located. Bathrooms are often moist and even when an exhaust fan has been used in one regularly, it still might not have been enough to pull out all of the dampness. This can cause mold on the ceilings, walls, baseboards, and around windows and doors. Water damage and mold can also be found behind the tub surround, shower stall walls, and behind and under the sinks where leaking might have taken place. Any drywall, wall studs, and insulation affected will have to be cleaned or removed and replaced depending on the damage.

Even when kitchens have been kept clean, if there has been leaking appliances or plumbing, you can run into rotting in the floors with water damage and mold there as well as behind and under cabinets where the sink is. The same holds true for a kitchen as a bathroom when moisture from cooking has been present. When mold gets into the floor wood underneath the top covering, this can mean tearing out the affected part of the floor and replacing it or the wall area and cabinet. If the mold has reached into the floor joists or wall studs, these might have to be replaced as well.

Mold and water damage can also be found in the attic and basements. Even if you are not planning to finish these areas as living space, the moisture or water damage still must be repaired because of the damage that can be done to the home foundation. Water damage in these areas can cause leaning walls, floors, windows, and doors. These repairs can be very costly when damage is significant and take a good while to repair.
