Finding Veterinary Specific Cat Food Diets

Pets need the most out of their nutrition. When cats have veterinary cat food diets, they can surely live to be a better pet. An excellent diet translates to fewer trips to the veterinarian, fewer run-ins with diseases and lower expenses overall. But some owners of cats do not really think about their pet's diet to maintain their optimum health.

First of all, cat lovers should note the number of times they feed their cat. Unlike dogs, cats cannot go out and exercise. The greatest factor by which owners can control the weight of their cat is to control the amount of food to give. If a cat is saturated with individual meals throughout the day, they might end up suffering from obesity. Cats usually regulate their food intake, but if they are continuously fed large quantities, they may end up eating too much and become over weight. It really depends on the kind of food that is fed to them. Essentially, cats are carnivores. This means they need a lot of meat in their diets. They really cannot be sustained on a diet that is low in protein. If they are forced to keep away from protein, they lose a high percentage of their body weight, and if they simply lack one of the key amino acids (specifically arginine) in their diets, they can quickly become lethargic, hyper-salivate and show vocalisation. In addition, arginine is required by felines to produce urea, one of the waste products from the metabolism of protein.

Taurine is also a big issue. Taurine is an amino acid which our pet cats are not able to produce by themselves sufficiently. A significant portion of a cat's diet must contain taurine. If cats develop a deficiency, they may suffer from serious and irreversible damage to vital organs like the heart and the eyes. However, taurine is found almost exclusively in meat. Given the carnivorous nature of cats, protein from meat truly is necessary.

Feeding cats raw liver regularly may also prove to be a very unwise decision. If they are given this in their meals, they can get a condition called hypervitaminosis A. When cats get this, they can show lethargy, a stiff neck and a variety of other skeletal problems. Owners are advised not to give cats liver more than once a week.

Cat foods, on the other hand, are expertly formulated and undergo many tests. Tests are administered to make sure that a good mixture of proteins, carbohydrates and fats fit the needs of our feline friends. Cat foods are relatively easier to give and they cost less than human food and of course, in turn, you can enjoy one healthy pet.
