There are many individuals who do not qualify for traditional group health insurance. This can be a result of job loss, divorce, or self-employment status. Most individuals do not have a clue on what options are available, especially if they have always have coverage through their employer. Unfortunately, employers are gradually decreasing benefits, including health care coverage and the amount they contribute. Others are offering supplemental insurance in place of a traditional health care plan. The the cost will be determined by the type of coverage you choose and the number of people who will be included in the plan.

Managed Care Insurance

You have probably heard of PPOs and HMOs before, and you might have been insured by one if you worked for a large company. Private medical insurance offers the same type of managed care coverage, give or take a few of the perks. With this type of coverage members much visit physicians within the network. Participating hospitals and places to fill your prescriptions will be mandated as well. Many of the plans cover visits to your primary care physician, hospitalizations, and prescription drugs. Specialized services must be pre-authorized in order to have them covered.

When money is not an issue, most individuals will opt for the hassle free health coverage plans, but not everyone can afford these types of plans, especially if family coverage is needed. There are other options though.

Mini-Medical Coverage

Mini medical plans are a viable option for individuals who cannot afford traditional private insurance health care plans. Mini plans are beneficial for a visit to the doctor to get a prescription, a routine check up, or an non-emergency visit. The way it works is benefits are paid to the provider based on the usual and customary fees in the area. The member (you) are required to pay the different between what the physician charges and what the insurance pays.

Some mini medical plans also cover hospitalization but coverage is limited. Plans pay a specific amount daily and the member will be required to pay the difference. These plans vary in what is covered, and the amount you pay is based on the plan you choose.

Short Term Major Medical

Unlike mini plans, short term coverage is like other major medical plans only for a short period of time. For individuals who need coverage for a short time, but require frequent doctor visits this may be a good option.

Fee-For-Service Plans

Fee for service plans allow you more freedom when it comes to choosing a physician. You can even pick the hospital of your choice. Most of these plans have deductibles, which are set when you pick your plan. In most cases you must pay for the service upfront, submit the paperwork to the insurance company and wait to be reimbursed. The reimbursement is normally covered at the usual and customary rates, which means you will end pay paying more for the option to pick your own doctor.

Taking the time to research the different medical insurance plans available, and more importantly, understanding what each plans covers will help you make a well informed decision in finding affordable private medical insurance. Explore your options so you can obtain the most coverage at the best price.
