Finding The Right Mechanic

By:

When it comes to choosing a mechanic, a trusted friend or family member would be the ideal choice. Unfortunately, we don't all have these types of connections in the automotive industry, so for the rest of us we're stuck trying to find reliable reviews on the Internet or asking acquaintances whom they use and if they've been happy with the results. Maybe you've finally located a mechanic that seems to be doing the work correctly, but how can you really tell? See if your mechanic lives up to these standards.

They Call Before Any Work is Performed

Many state laws now require that you be contacted and verbally authorize any repairs over $50 or $75, depending on where you live. This is done so that the auto repair place cannot perform every repair they see fit and then hand you an enormous bill when you show up to retrieve your vehicle. Some places will try to get around this by lying about verbal confirmations which is why it's a good idea to give the mechanic your cell phone number so you will have a log of phone calls made to and from the repair place. A really great auto mechanic will contact you before any repair.

They Give You all the Options

Most repairs are pretty straight forward, either the part needs to be replaced or repaired. In the case where the part can be either replaced or repaired, a reliable auto mechanic should give you both options and explain the pros and cons of each option. They should also recommend alternative solutions if they exist. Sometimes, a great mechanics will explain to you that while repair is possible, it might make sense to buy a new car and skip the repair all together. A frank and honest conversation with recommendations is a good sign of a trustworthy mechanic.

They Meet Their Deadlines

Every supply chain has its occasional snags and sometimes an auto part is really not available in a timely manner. This can be true if you need a part in an obscure color or on an older vehicle. Your mechanic should be aware of these limitations and be able to give you a deadline for your car repair. As soon as it becomes obvious that he or she will not be able to meet the deadline, the auto mechanic should call you, explain the situation and give you a revised deadline. This is helpful if you need to line up rides to places or extend your car rental.

They are Courteous and Respectful

You want a mechanic that you'd feel comfortable sending your mom to see for her car repair needs. If you feel like a mechanic is talking down to you or trying to sell you on repairs you don't really need, get out of there fast! One of the most important aspects of a reliable mechanic is that you feel like you two are on the same page and that you don't feel like you're getting the wool pulled over your eyes.
