Finding The Perfect Birthday Presents For Men

By:

When you're looking to buy a birthday present for a man, your thoughts might run a bit like this. 'I'll just get him something that appeals to his primal male instincts, like a crate of beer or a t-shirt with a monkey on it.' How wrong you'd be. Contrary to popular belief, men actually have more complex desires and require shrewd understanding and analysis if you are to achieve birthday gift success. So take a minute to contemplate your target man-partner or man-friend, and see which of the following recognised types they most closely fit for some handy gift ideas.

Type 1: The adventurer
Some people are born restless, always looking for new experiences, not satisfied to sit around the house in front of the TV football every weekend. Luckily there are a host of experiences and products available for these adventurous types.
For adrenaline-junkies, a helicopter, racing driver or powerboat experience offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to throw themselves into the hot seat of a high-altitude or high-velocity monstrosity. Who knows, they might even discover that being a helicopter pilot is actually their true-calling and you'll have inadvertently given them the gift of a new career.
Alternatively, the man might be more of an outdoorsman longing for a gadget to make those regular camping trips more hospitable. In this case, a 'portable shower' could serve as an invaluable addition to his outdoor arsenal and help ensure that his time away doesn't result in a permanent drop in hygienic standards.

Type 2: The frustrated domestic
In these more enlightened times, it's not uncommon for men to enjoy spending time at home cooking or indulging in some other domestic pursuit. At the same time though, they might wish to inject a bit of their personality into their home and something like a novelty knife block could be the answer. The 'voodoo' knife block (a popular choice featuring a figure skewered by all manner of high-quality cutting implements) often come to form the eccentric centre-point of the male kitchen.
If the man is more technically-inclined, a gadget that slots perfectly into his home electronics set-up should go down well. A set of wireless headphones could be just the thing to complete his personal home cinema experience. A more obvious option would be to supplement his near-religious obsession with the iPhone, by taking advantage of the huge number of accessories available. This includes everything from a camera flash to a movie tripod.

Type 3: The 'man-child'
Adolescence lasts longer for some than others and there's an identifiable sub-set of men who take pride in their immaturity. In this case, novelty 'retro' themed items are a good way to keep them amused, for one day at least. Gifts, such as the oversized alarm-clock shaped like arcade icon Pac-Man, are almost guaranteed to strike the right chord and often come to be cherished by older men who are gripped by nostalgia.
For the more overtly childish, grown-up versions of toy guns such as the 'Airzooka' can satisfy more annoying impulses. The Airzooka fires targeted blasts of air at a range of 50 feet, ideal for long-range pranks. While this might be the last thing you want to have around, you might just have to compromise if you're looking for the ideal birthday gift.
