Finding Places To Play Golf During The Uks Winter Months

By:

Golf is one of the most popular sports in the UK but has the misfortune, due to it being played outside, of being almost abandoned during the winter months, unless you are the die-hard player who is willing to play in any kind of weather. However, its not only down to the stamina and determination of the player that decides whether you will manage to get a golf break over the winter months.

Many courses in the UK suffer terribly during the winter months, becoming water-logged during heavy rain periods or melting snow, however, there are a few courses throughout the UK that survive the bad conditions and what makes these courses playable during the wetter months is good drainage.

What this means for many of the keen all-weather players looking for a golf break is that they either have to travel a fair distance in order to get a game or forego their favourite sport until the weather improves.

Finding an all-weather playing course with a guarantee of play on a golf break can sometimes be difficult but one such course that boasts of losing only 1 days play is Thorpeness Hotel and Golf Club. Based in Thorpeness in Suffolk, the course is laid on sandy soil therefore drainage is excellent, and this area of the Suffolk coast has a drier than most climate.

Set amongst the Suffolk coastal heath-land, the golf course offers a tough challenge for all levels of player. Designed by James Braid in 1922, this Suffolk golf course winds through silver birch, pine trees, gorse and heather and was described by the Sunday Telegraph Golfing Guide as "Reminiscent of the inland glories of Sunningdale and Woodhall Spa".

If a golf break with something on offer for non players is something you are looking for too, then the hotel at Thorpeness is very well equipped. This 3 star hotel is situated in a peaceful location next to the Meare and is only 5 minutes walk from the stunning Suffolk coastline. It has 36 spacious and comfortable bedrooms, many of which have views over the Meare or the golf course.

Close by is the fishing town of Aldeburgh where you will find a number of shops, boutiques and antique shops, and Aldeburgh even boasts its own cinema to ensure that no-players are adequately catered for. Of course, being so close to the beach is a big attraction for non-players and players alike and Thorpeness is part of the Suffolk Heritage coast, an area of conservation with miles of walks and cycle trails. It also has an abundance of bird and wildlife and is home to the RSPBs flagship reserve, Minsmere, which is situated nearby.
