Finding Mold In Your Home

By:

Imagine this:

You just moved into the home of your dreams a few months ago. Everything has been going great. You love the neighborhood, you love how your home is close enough to hot spots, such as downtown, restaurants, and shopping centers, and most of all, you absolutely love your home.

But then something strange starts to happen. You start getting allergies whenever you're inside your home, and the culprit is not the change in season. In fact, you might feel better when you are outside as opposed to when you are inside of your home. In addition to the allergies, you might start coughing, wheezing, or having difficulty breathing.

What is the reason behind this sudden change in your well-being? What is causing the allergies and the respiratory problems? The answer is simple, and it might shock you to know that you are just one of many, many people who are afflicted with these types of symptoms.

The culprit, in this case, is most likely mold. Mold spores can be found just about anywhere because it is airborne and microscopic. These organisms help materials, such as leaves, plants, animals, organic materials, and even humans, to decompose and return to the soil of the earth. Although it is perfectly fine and normal when mold is found outside in a natural setting, it is definitely not fine when you find it inside your home.

If you do suspect there is mold in your home, then you have two options of going about this. First, you can do a visual inspection of your home to find out where the mold is growing. Check in the corners of your walls and where there might be any furniture in the way. Make sure you check rooms that are more susceptible to developing mold, such as the bathroom, laundry room, or garage. Once you find the mold, you can clean it up yourself with a solution of bleach and warm water. Let it dry thoroughly by using a fan, air conditioner, or blow dryer before placing furniture back to cover the wall.

Sometimes, you might find that cleaning it yourself will not be enough. In some cases, the mold growth you see on your walls might be a small part of the bigger picture. Extensive mold damage could be inside of your walls due to faulty plumbing or a leaking roof. When you have mold growing within your walls, underneath your floor, or in other places where you don't have access to, you will definitely have to contact a mold remediation company to inspect your home and then to remove the mold for good.

It is important to obtain home owner's or renter's insurance to cover you in situations like these. Having insurance will mean you won't have to fork out anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars in costly remediation costs!
