Finding An Endometriosis Specialist

By:

Once you have been given the diagnosis that you have endometriosis, it is time to snap out of shock and do something about it. Your choice of treatment is going to be very dependent on your level of symptoms as well as the stage that your endometriosis is at. Time is ticking away every minute so it is of critical importance to begin treatment as soon as physically possible.

First, you need to find a doctor that has a specialty in endometriosis. You may feel extremely comfortable around your current gynecologist that you've been seeing for many years as did your mother or sister, but if they don't know too much about endometriosis you won't receive the maximum benefits for your treatment and will have to search elsewhere anyways so make the right choice the first time around.

Luckily for you, the number of doctors who are specializing in endometriosis is growing in today's society because the number of women who are diagnosed and impacted by it is also growing so the demand for specialists is quite high.

Most women usually search on the internet to self diagnose and then they will bring these common concerns, symptoms, and occurrences to the attention of their doctor before they are officially diagnosed and treating can begin.

The doctor that you choose for your treatment needs to have quite a few qualifications in order for you to receive the benefits you're seeking. They need to have a thorough understanding of the disease and its progression, openness to working with you and not against you, and most of all compassion and understanding for the difficulty that you are experiencing in dealing with the disease because it cannot be recognized as easy by any means whatsoever.

Endometriosis specific doctors are generally located in larger metropolitan areas and cities. If you want to seek out a specialist you might want to try finding an endometriosis support group and then see what benefits they may be able to offer you for both knowledge and support as well. Your family doctor and the internet may be great resources to locate a good specialist as well.

Unfortunately, if you live in an area that is rural you may not have access to the treatments of a specialist. In order to get the best care, it might be required that you travel out of the area to see someone. If you have medical insurance be sure to check if this is covered under your policy.

With a referral it may be possible to get treatment covered so be sure to discuss the options that you have with both your doctor and insurance company.

A few other things to look for in a doctor are based on your first impression. This can mean quite a bit. The doctor should be willing to answer any and all questions thoroughly and with patience. He or she should also listen carefully to whatever you are telling him or her about your experience, signs, and symptoms.

If they act like something is no big deal or makes you feel brushed off, then feel free to look around for another specialist. They should also be certain to do a full cervical and pelvic exam themselves to get an idea of how far along your condition is and to get a general idea of its progression and specifics.

As a general rule, if you feel uncomfortable or your gut gives you a bad signal then search for a different doctor. Don't settle for any less than what you deserve.
