Finding An Effective Homeschool Spanish Curriculum

If you don't speak any Spanish, you may be worried about adding Spanish into your children's homeschool curriculum. On the one hand, it is really beneficial to know a second language and it opens up opportunities to learn more about the Spanish culture, but on the other - if you don't speak it, how can you possibly teach it to your kids?

Since Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the US and fourth worldwide, it can certainly be a huge benefit to be fluent in the language. Here in the States, it is no longer just Florida and the states on the Mexican border that have large Spanish-speaking populations. All over the country Spanish is becoming more prevalent. Once your kids get out into the job market, having bilingualism on their resume will be a definite asset.

The problem arises in trying to find or create a good homeschool Spanish curriculum if you don't know any Spanish yourself. Finding a good curriculum is much easier than creating one yourself. Here is one list of several available homeschool Spanish curriculum programs and here are some things to consider in evaluating any homeschool Spanish curriculum.

1. Does it include lesson plans and a teacher's section?
2. Does it meet the criteria for high school credit if you need to be at that level?
3. Is the focus on learning and comprehension or memorizing?
4. Are there any audio or video materials available with the material? If you don't speak Spanish, you will obviously need to hear proper pronunciation.
5. Does it include tests and quizzes, or do you have to make your own?
6. Are there any fun activity suggestions or games included to keep the learning fun?
7. Are the reading assignments in line with the student's comprehension, interest and age level?
8. Is it affordable?
