Finding An Eco Friendly Community

By:

People have different priorities when it comes to eco-friendly homes, Asheville and in the surrounding areas included. There is no stock standard for what an eco-friendly home even is. There are different certifications that people can get, such as Energy Star, LEED, or Healthy Built certifications, which helps to create some defining parameters for their definition of green building, but even then, there is continuously more available than could be defined, tested, or fit into a certification just yet. Looking within an eco-friendly community often allows one how some groups of people choose to set the standard for green built homes. The overarching principles that people adhere to there are often just as revealing, in terms of their chosen focuses, as they are about the standards for green housing in an area.

When considering eco-friendly communities there are a lot of options to look at. Obviously buying a home is an important personal decision, as it will be the space that you will be living possibly raising one's family in, retiring to or just starting out. One's home has a profound affect on one's state of mind and well-being. It should be a space that feels nurturing and supportive. Part of why many people choose to live within an intentional community is for the sense of support that comes from having like-minding neighbors who have goals and interests in common. Raising the status of neighbors from people who live nearby to people who are actively engaged in creating community together can be very fulfilling. When looking at eco-communities it is very common to find shared green space and shared gardens as well as other food producing land. If you share a greenhouse, orchards and cropland with your neighbors you are bound together not just in location but in your food supply. Together you sustain yourselves from the land, often on a larger scale than would be possible if you were doing it on your own unless you were farming or homesteading.

Such communities have existed for a long time so it should not be any surprise that they continue to exist today. While once people might have looked at intentional communities and thought that they were just communes or groups of hippies living together, today's eco communities paint a very different picture. The diversity of communities is such that you can find one that better suits your interests and intentions, as well as your price range (and never once be called or look like a hippy).
