Finding A Job - Qualities That Will Help You Get Hired

Do certain kinds of people have an easier time finding a job than others? The truth is that there are personality traits and behaviors that lend themselves towards having an easier time in a job hunt. The good news is that you can easily adapt these qualities yourself so you'll have a better chance at getting a great job sometime soon.

The first thing you have to be is disciplined. Set aside time every day-a couple of hours if you can-to sitting down with your laptop and combing through online job listings. Send out your cover letters and resume as often as possible, on a daily basis would be best. Take some time to sit with your cell phone and cold call friends, relatives, neighbors, former colleagues, schoolmates-anyone who might be able to give you a lead.

You're also going to need up-to-date technological skills. Whatever job you're in, with only a few exceptions, you'll probably have to use a computer at least at some point. Study the latest and most popular business software; take a few courses if you have to.

Another quality that's important, in so many cases, is the ability to work well with others. So much work is collaborative these days, and teleconferencing and interoffice communication tools are creating new ways of connecting with colleagues, and sharing data and presentations with them. This means you have to be able to get along well in a group. If you're in college, join as many group activities as you can so you'll have this experience to show off on your resume. Volunteer at community organizations, rewarding to do in itself and also a good way to demonstrate your commitment to others to prospective employers. If you tend to have anger or jealousy issues, you might want to learn some meditation techniques to help you relax. You could even consider speaking with a therapist.

You'll also need to have good communication skills in order to ace a job interview, and in order to succeed in almost any job. After all, whether you're a doctor, a plumber or a financial planner, you need to be able to explain to your customers what steps you're going to take; you need to speak with colleagues at conferences and just be able to chat with someone you work with at lunch. If you're a shy person, practice expressing your thoughts in clear and succinct ways. Get a friend or family member to converse with you and give you tips for expressing yourself more clearly. And always speak up!

Last, a job search can be frustrating and intimidating. Be persistent and positive, and don't give up. Treat every day like it's the day when you could finally land that dream job. Always remember the good things you have in your life; being grateful can help you feel better after a long day searching for a job.
