Find The Best Solution For Your Car Troubles

By:

It's never convenient to have car problems - especially if it turns out not to be something simple, like a flat tire or an empty gas tank. For some, cars are so foreign an object that any repair or maintenance is handed over to the professionals. If that's your choice, car repair shops will love you and your money. But if you choose to do a little DIY, learning how to fix your car on your own can save dollars and teach you some skills.

Even the mechanically disinclined can learn to do simple car maintenance. Checking oil, coolant, and windshield washer levels is easy to learn and easy to do. Knowing how to change a tire can save you when you're stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. Even changing the oil isn't that difficult, though it may be dirty. Cars come with a manual (unlike children), and there are only so many things that can affect a car and cause it to run poorly or not at all.

Much of fixing cars starts with proper maintenance. By keeping the engine tuned up, well lubricated, and all systems go, you can avoid larger problems that inevitably worsen if you neglect to fix them. Ignoring the "service engine soon" light might do little, or it might mean you're going to need a new transmission because you didn't take care of a much smaller and less costly problem when you had the chance.

The first step you can take is to get your auto checked for a problem code. If the brake light, oil light, or the dreaded "service engine soon" light has come on, it's time to take it to an automotive repair shop or auto parts stores. They will usually check the reason for the light, and your car will give them a code. That code will tell you what part, or group of parts, needs to be checked for possible repair. If you have the tools and the know-how, you can often buy the part and repair the problem yourself. Otherwise, you can hand it over to the experts.

A car mechanic with years of experience will often be able to pinpoint the problem very quickly, sometimes even from your explanation of the issue (be sure to use descriptive noises to imitate how the engine sounds or that strange clonking noise in the back). Honest mechanics will be able to tell you exactly what they'll need to do and give you a pretty good estimate of price. If it turns out to be something else, or an additional fix, they should call you and get an okay before proceeding.
