There are many ways available to know if a woman is pregnant. Finding out if a woman is pregnant is divided into three categories: presumptive, probable and positive. Under the presumptive are the symptoms that a woman feels during the first trimester of pregnancy. Examples of presumptive are increase in urine frequency, amenorrhea, nausea and vomiting. The probable category is the symptoms that are felt by the nurse or doctor. The home based pregnancy test is under the probable category. The last category is the positive. The positive is the confirmatory test and only the doctor is allowed to diagnose this.

The most common way to know that a woman is pregnant is by using the home pregnancy kit. It is easy to use and accessible since you can buy this in the pharmacy. The pregnancy kit detect for the presence of the hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin or well known as HCG. HCG is the hormone that is released at the first stage of pregnancy. It can be detect on the urine and blood specimen.

During the initial days of conception, the level of HCG is low thus taking pregnancy test at this time will result to false negative. The best time to take pregnancy test is seven to ten days after an unprotected sexual intercourse. By this time, the HCG level has reached its level that it can be detected in the urine.
