Find Mold In Your Home? Get A Mold Inspector For Peace Of Mind

By:

Chances are we'll all have to deal with a mold problem in our home at some point in our lives. While it's possible it'll be a small area that's easy to clean and contain it could just as easily be in a widespread area such as a basement or attic. When should you get a mold inspector to come in? Certainly if it's widespread you should get an inspector, but you should consider it in cases where it's in a small area but you're still very concerned with it. An expert residential inspector may be just what the stress doctor ordered in order to give you the peace of mind you need.

The first thing to be done once mold has been discovered is to determine the extent of it. Is it in a confined area? Or, is it spreading through the walls and ceiling? Even if it's widespread it may not be visible on the surface, but you will likely be able to smell it. Remember that mold can grow on the backside of drywall, under carpet, and on the inside of wallpaper. Unfortunately this may involve peeling back wallpaper or ripping up sections of carpet to determine the extent of it. Save these steps for the expert mold review.

Don't freak out if you discover the mold is black in color. Despite the horror stories you hear about black mold there are actually several different types. Some are actually completely harmless, while others are toxic. Your certified mold inspector will have to determine this for you, but don't jump to conclusions. Homes have been burned down to the basement and rebuilt by overly concerned homeowners when chances are the black mold they discovered was harmless and could have been removed in a far less expensive manner.

Mold thrives on moisture, so your next step will be to determine the source of this moisture. Mold spores are everywhere, and they can only touch down on damp surfaces. If you can eliminate the moisture, you'll eliminate future mold growth. If it's forming under your bathroom sink, find out where the sink is leaking and stop it. If the roof is damaged and water is seeping in you need to patch that up and dry up any remaining moisture. If you remove the source of the moisture, you should effectively prevent mold from ever being a problem again.

Once you know how widespread the problem is, you can see if a mold review is worth the cost. If the mold appears to be harmless and it's in a small enough area, you can take steps to clean it up yourself.

Don't delay if the mold is all over the house. Get a Long Island home inspector in to perform a mold review so they can determine the next, best course of action for you. A reliable inspection can save a lot of money and effort in the long run.
