Dance is an integral part of culture and community celebrations around the world. While every society has its own style, globalization has promoted an exchange of ideas across national barriers. As they do in many other areas of life, movies share stories that may be far removed from your reality. If you find the world of dance to be intriguing, check the satellite TV line-up for the films below, all of which expose viewers to a range of styles from ballet to hip-hop.

Billy Elliot (2000). This British drama tells the story of a young boy named Billy, who adores ballet although he does not initially have the support of his father, Jackie. A widowed coal miner, Jackie initially tries to push Billy towards more traditional, male-dominated sports such as boxing. But when that fails, and his son persists in his love for ballet, Jackie begins to relent. This inspirational tale was edited to be a bit more family-friendly, as the language initially caused the Motion Picture Association to label it with an R rating. After great success in theatres, the storyline was adapted for a Broadway show that opened in 2008.

Center Stage (2000). In this dance-based drama film, twelve dancers audition successfully for the American Ballet Academy, which is considered a stepping stone to the national ballet company. Only half of the class can make it, so competition between the dancers becomes fierce even as friendships are forged and romance develops. One third of the cast are dancers in real life, boosting the quality of the performances. While the plot line may not be entirely convincing at times, if you enjoy watching dance, you will like Center Stage as well as its sequel, which was released eight years later.

The Company (2003). If you are a fan of behind-the-scenes stories, check satellite TV movie channels for this film about the Chicago Ballet. Most of the storyline is based on real-life events and challenges faced by the company members, bringing to light the dedication and commitment of ballet dancers. Even though the box office performance was less than stellar, critics have offered praise. Slant Magazine even considers it to be one of the top films of that year.

Step Up (2006). Hip-hop, break-dance, and ballet share the attention in this romantic drama which centers on another group of youth more interested in dance than in sports. The two central characters, Nora and Tyler, are both dancers, but with very different techniques. Nora comes from a privileged background has been trained in ballet, while Tyler is used to street dancing. Despite their differences, the two learn to work together and fuse their styles.

Take the Lead (2006). This is yet another movie about dancing to enjoy on your HD screen at home. Antonio Banderas stars as a classical dance instructor named Pierre Dulaine who works in a school. He does everything possible to garner support for the schools dance program, especially when the principal considers cutting funding to it. Though the plotline does not fully develop some of the characters, the dance moves make up for it.
