Fighting Terrorism With Dna

While our nation's security has been heightened since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, future attacks are still possible. Various types of tools are used to aid in the fight against terrorism and DNA testing could become one of them. By obtaining a simple mouth swab from terrorist suspects, a DNA test could be performed and results could be used to quickly identify detainees and keep track of suspects involved in future acts of terrorism.

Back in 2002, the U.S. government proposed the creation of a DNA database of terrorism suspects, however, it is controversial amongst civil liberty groups. In the UK, it is illegal to take DNA samples for DNA testing without a person's consent. However, in July 2007, the British Home Office released proposals for new anti-terror measures, which included new data-sharing powers among the police and intelligence agencies, and a statutory basis for the police counter-terrorist DNA database.

DNA testing has been used to identify prisoners in Afghanistan. In 2002, FBI Director, Robert Mueller, said that the identities of some of the prisoners at Camp X-Ray were simply not known. Civil liberty groups were seriously concerned that innocent suspects were being held in inhumane conditions. Because of interrogations in the camp, there has been much controversy about the way American and British troops treated the prisoners. DNA testing was helpful in identifying the prisoners who were hard to classify because many of them only knew each other by their aliases.

The identification of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay has been an ongoing issue. Human rights lawyers have expressed concern that prisoners have been held without access to fair trial. Back in 2002, U.S. authorities obtained DNA samples from detainees in an attempt to identify them correctly.
