Fibers Used To Produce Carpets

There are many, assorted fibers that are commonly used when manufacturing carpets. A few of the natural fibers that are used in the manufacturing of rugs are wool, silk, cotton and hemp. Some synthetic fibers that are used are nylon, polypropylene, and polyester. Rugs can be made from either a single kind of fiber or a combination of several types. Fibers are chosen based on their durability, appearance, cost, and how easy they are to manufacture.

Nylon is the most common material that is used to make rugs. Nylon can be dyed and printed easily. It is also extremely durable. The main disadvantage of using a carpet in the home that is made from nylon fibers is that it can be dyed easily. This also means that if something is accidentally spilled on the rug, it will also stain just as easily. In order for nylon to be stain resistant, the dye sites that are there when the rug is originally manufactured need to be filled in. Nylon is produced with petroleum; therefore, the cost of nylon carpeting varies depending on the price of oil at the time.

Polypropylene is also known as olefin and is typically used in the making of Berber type rugs. Berber rugs are a loop pile kind of woven rug. It is better to have a commercial style Berber carpet with extremely small loops because they don't wear out as those made with larger loops. The polypropylene Berber carpets are made only for light use in the home. They have sufficient stain resistance, except when the spill is made with something that is oil based as these are difficult to clean.

Wool is one of the most excellent choices when choosing a fiber to produce a carpet. Wool is a remarkably strong fiber, which means that a carpet made from wool is durable and will last for a long time without having to be replaced. Wool can be easily dyed in a variety of colors, and there is a lot of it. Wool is typically mixed with other synthetic fibers to make it more durable than wool that is not mixed with synthetic fibers. Wool is easily dyed, but is an expensive fiber, so it isn't a large part of the market.

Polyester is a relatively inexpensive fiber, but has a tendency to flatten easily, so it is used in the creation of low-priced carpeting. It isn't as strong as some of the other varieties of fibers that are available to produce carpets. Polyester is naturally stain resistant, so it is easy to maintain. It is hydrophobic, which means it doesn't absorb liquids as easily as the other fibers, however, polyester has to be dyed in a molten state.

Acrylic is a synthetic fiber that has gone through an array of changes since it was first introduced. This is because it used to fuzz easily as the fibers would break off with contact or friction. Though the issues haven't been entirely fixed, the acrylic that is used to make carpets today is more durable than in the beginning. It is difficult to dye acrylic; however, this also makes it colorfast, which means that the dyes won't fade when it is washed.
