Fiber optics only remains unknown to those who are ignorant of the current technological trends, or are living a lifestyle that likened to those of cavemen. When the technology was first implemented for commercial use many were dumbfounded by the dramatic increase in download speeds and mere smoothness when browsing different websites.

Nonetheless, all experts have to agree whats most astonishing about the fiber optics technology isnt its high speed data transmission, nor is it even its minimal data loss, its the simplicity of the technology that built upon an old founded principle.

A simple explanation to the fundamental workings of the optical fiber is to say that it operates on internal reflection. The way internal reflection could be done is to provide the light that passes through the fiber with a reflective surface, so that the light signals could be channeled through the thin fiber.

It could be illustrated in an example of shining light on a mirror with a torch, where light that is shine unto the mirror could be visible as a round spot on another surface. Light that is shined from one end of the fiber acts just like the light from a torch, whereas the walls of the fiber act as mirrors to guide the light when travelling through the fiber.

To provide light beams with a surface for internal reflections, a very pure form of silicon is used. If impurities are found in the fibers, itll obstruct the light beams from undergoing internal reflection.

Total Internal reflection

However, its precisely the simplicity of the technology that requires much attention to its technicalities. Experts are definitely not looking for undirected bounces of light beams, but theyre looking searching for something called total internal reflection.

Total internal reflection is done when light hits the reflective surface and forms an incident angle that is larger than a critical angle. This not only avoids dissipation of light so that less data loss will occur, but also helps to propagate the light beams as far as possible.
