Fiber Optic Cable-flexibility

By:

Optical fibers are commonly known to be slightly thicker than the human hair, yet the transmission of telecommunication information could never solely depend on a single strand of the fiber.

As fast as light transmission can be in comparison with other transmission mediums, the massive amount of data thats being exchanged via the internet or cellular will require more than a single fiber. Hence, multiple strands of the fiber are held together to form whats known as fiber optic cable. The fiber optic cable not only provides more effective transmission, but also allows the cable to be bent without breaking the fibers.

Flexibility

A simple experiment that is usually carried out to prove the flexibility of the cable in transmitting light signals is to knot a fiber optic cable. The light that shines from one end will still be able to be transmitted to the other end. The durability of the wire to undergo stress is important as replacing the broken cable will be costly. For companies that fully rely on the technology, it could cause a major setback as valuable time is lost in repairing the cable.

The flexibility of the wire cables comes from a resin coating that acts as buffer layer, like a bubble wrap thats placed around goods that are sent for shipping. For other fiber optic cables, fibrous polymer or gel medium could be used to provide protection and support for the fibers. Alternate arrangement of the fibers could also allow the cable to be stretched without having stretched the fiber.

Common misunderstanding

A misconception has been arise from reports of broken cables under the sea bed and has caused many to be afraid of adapting the technology. Such reports have further made it evident that it requires an extremely large impact to be able to shatter the silicon fibers. Despite the fragile nature that optical fibers have, dropping the cables or bending the cables will never be able to cause damage to the fibers as there is an added strength in numbers.
