At the International Engine of the Year 2011 awards the Fiat TwinAir engine scooped up a commendable four awards. The judging panel at the International Engine of the Year awards consisted of 76 journalists and industry experts from 36 countries.
The judging panel named the TwinAir engine best in its displacement category (less than 1000 cm3) as well as crowning it International Engine of the Year 2011, the top award in the competition. The TwinAir engine also scooped the Best New Engine 2011 and Best Green Engine 2011 at the prestigious awards.Last year Fiat won the International Technobest prize for the TwinAir system, having won the prize a year earlier for its innovative MultiAir technology.
The tiny 875cc engine is the most green petrol engine in the world, emitting just 95g/km of CO2 and promising 68.9 miles per gallon. The engine utilises Fiats revolutionary MultiAir technology which promises optimized combustion and valve control and for improved economy and emissions. With the Fiat 500 TwinAir emissions are fifteen percent lower than Fiats 1.2 litre 4 cylinder engine, and a 23 percent power boast is achieved thanks to the turbocharger. The Fiat 500 Twinair also weighs just 85kg which not only contributes to the impressive fuel economy but ensures the 500 is extremely nimble with a 0 to 62 miles per hour time of 11 seconds.
The Fiat TwinAir engine can be found in a
Fiat 500 in Newcastle. The TwinAir engine is currently available in 85HP Turbo configuration in the Fiat 500 and 500C.
John Carey from Wheels said, "This is proof that aggressive downsizing need not spell timid performance. Surprisingly torquey, impressively and affordably efficient, this tiny twin also has plenty of character."
Dean Slavnich, Engine Technology International, said: "Four trophies in one year? A remarkable performance! TwinAir has written its place in the history of the International Engine of the Year Awards.
All four awards were collected by Eng. Aldo Marangoni, Product Engineering Vice President and by Eng. Dario Sacco, Engines Platform Vice President. The managers of Fiat Powertrain said, "Today's success is the crowning moment of all our hard work in researching innovative technological solutions and designing increasingly efficient engines. Our engines contribute towards sustaining the leadership position of the Fiat S.P.A. group in the rankings of the most eco-friendly car manufacturers."
The Fiat TwinAir engine will soon be available in the new Chrysler Ypsilon in a 65HP aspirated version and in another high-performance 105HP Turbo version.
