Although it is a little milder this year, we can still expect a tough winter ahead, and therefore we need to be fully prepared for it.
The lack of road-gritting may cause us problems we cannot fix, but there is no harm in being as prepared as possible when it comes to getting your car ready for winter. There are a number of ways we can make our cars as winter-proof as possible:
"Make sure you have the correct amount of tread on your tyres. 1.6mm is the legal limit, but in winter it is advised to change your tyres when they reach a depth of 3mm. You might also want to consider fitting winter tyres to provide extra confidence on icy or snow-covered roads.
"Make sure you have used anti-freeze to reduce the chance of damage to your car. Most new cars only need new anti-freeze every five years, but older cars should have theirs checked every two years.
"Pressing the clutch when starting a cold engine disconnects the engine from the gearbox, meaning there is less drag which eases the pressure on the starter motor.
"Ensure you have used screenwash to avoid freezing. The gritted roads can cause a lot of salt and dirt to accumulate on the windscreen, and if your washer is frozen, you will not be able to clean your windows and visibility will be reduced.
"Always keep your tank at least half full with fuel. You never know when you may be stuck in traffic!
"Keep supplies in your car, such as a warm coat, gloves and hat, food, and a hot drink. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged and put a shovel in the boot in case you have to dig your way out!
"Take extra care on every journey, drive slowly and be observant at all times.
