Tamilnadu is the land of tradition and culture renowned across the globe for its colorful fairs and festivals. Most of the Tamilnadu Festivals are associated with religion and temples. Almost all the festivals are celebrated with great pomp, gaiety and enthusiasm, which provide tourists an opportunity to experience rich and diverse culture of this state. This state has an unending cycle of fairs and festivals throughout the year. Some of the prominent festivals celebrated here are:

Pongal
It is known as the harvest festival. This is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in Tamil Nadu. The festival is celebrated for giving tribute to a rich harvest and prosperity. On the day of Pongal, families gather around a new earthen pot, at dawn time. As the pot of milk boils over, signifying prosperity, a shout of Pongalo Pongal. This thanks giving festival is celebrated on the first day of the Tamil Month Thai (Middle of January).

Karthigai Deepam
This is the oldest festival of Tamil Nadu which has been mentioned and referred in many of Tamil Holy Scriptures. It is believed that Lord Muruga, the divine light of Lord Shiva, took his form during this month. The ten-day festival is also known as the Festival of Lights and is said to be the extension of the Deepavali festival of India. The lighted lamp is considered auspicious symbols which ward off evil forces and usher in prosperity and joy.

Natyanjali Dance Festival
This is a festival dedicated to dance in devotion of Lord Shiva in the form of Nataraja. Though this is a cultural festival yet its religious significance makes it important festival of Tamilnadu. This festival is organized in the temple city of Chidambaram in February. It attracts famous and excellent classical dancers as well as young performers to showcase their talent.

Some of the other festivals in Tamilnadu which are celebrated with great pomp and gaiety are Chithirai, Mango, Saral, Dance, Jallikatu Bullfight and Vinayaka Chathurthi.
