Festival Pollensa Last Year Looking Forward To This Year Family

By:

If you like your classical music theres still time to catch the Festival Pollenca in northeast Mallorca which runs every Wednesday and Saturday for the remainder of July through to the end of August.

Friends of ours had been in 2008 and had caught a few performances ranging from a celebrity soprano to a renown Japanese violinist, so we decided to catch the tail end of the festival late last August and experienced Mozart and the London Gospel Choir in the same week! The Gospel was unforgettable. Needless to say, much because Im writing this, we loved Pollensa and are heading back to some jazz and classical at the medieval Cloisters of Santo Domingo this year. These events are fairly formal but theres an awful lot of other music going on thats more laid back - such as Flamenco, jazz and pop.

The twice-weekly concerts are held in the cloisters, which are easily accessed near the main square. As part of the Santo Domingo Convent this setting is extremely atmospheric. Tickets start from about 18 Euros which we didnt think was too bad given the setting and quality of classical music on offer.

We were staying outside the resort last year but our friends introduced us to a website showcasing some reasonably priced villas in mallorca so we booked early and are staying right in the middle of the action this year in a lovely-looking mallorca rental villa. It will be nice to be able to walk back there after the evening concerts and not have to worry about driving.

Theres something about the festival that works really well. It just creates such an amazing atmosphere in the resort and the nice thing is that its not an exclusive event. You can do it as luxuriously or as rustically as you wish. Were great walkers so are planning to head off on a couple of the hill trails, whilst when our friends went in 2008, they basically had a beach holiday with a bit of scuba diving plus music. It means you can spend days doing your own thing and meet up with friends in the evening or at the various music events.

And I think thats the good thing about the island and why the music festival works so well at Pollensa the fact that the resort attracts all sorts of people for all sorts of reasons beach, music, architecture, markets, galleries and museums. And although there is nightlife here its all embracing and theres plenty of traditional culture still to be enjoyed, not just pubs and clubs and neon lights for the teenies.

The music festival is just a fantastic excuse to visit this holiday resort on the island of Mallorca. Puerto Pollensa originally a fishing village - suits so many people as it has great scenery with the mountainous backdrop, fantastic beaches, and a really friendly vibe.

I think this is why the music festival works so well here and its really nice to have a beach resort that hosts a quality music festival for grown ups. As the festival is spread over a two-month period you can be sure of catching something in the program that is to your taste, and any number of parties, pageants and religious processions also take place during July and August in the area so theres always something going on its just perfect for the cultural tourist. You wont be able to put your camera down and youre guaranteed to come away with any number of great memories and stories.
