Fences In Cambridge Beware: There's A Teen Driver On The Loose

You would think that if you have a nice wide open gate to drive through it wouldn't be too hard to miss fences in Cambridge and avoid a collision. Unfortunately that wasn't the case the first time that my dad handed over the keys and let me drive.

Some friends told us that they had some wood in their yard if we wanted to come get it and use it for firewood.

We picked up the wood and my dad pulled the truck into the backyard. After several hours of splitting and stacking wood, we were finally done.

When my dad handed me the keys to his truck I should have been excited. I'm sure that anyone else my age would have been. I was a little different than your average teenager though. I was nervous.

While all of my friends were dying with anticipation of finally getting their drivers' licenses and all of the independence that comes with that rite of passage, I was perfectly content to let my parents chauffer me around for the rest of my life.

Within a few days of learning how to ride a bike at age eight, I had a rather embarrassing collision with a holly tree in our front yard. I could have gone to the left of the tree. I could have gone to the right of the tree. I even could have braked before I got to the tree. Instead, I rode straight into the tree.

After being mocked relentlessly by my brother and dealing with my dad who was completely astounded as to how a collision like that was even possible, I never rode a bike again. That probably gives you a pretty good idea of why I wasn't all that excited to get behind the wheel.

Anyway, my dad handed over his keys and told me to go ahead and park his truck in the driveway. I thought he was crazy. I think he thought that this would be a good opportunity for me to practice a little without having the intimidation factor that comes with traffic.

Well, I did prettya pretty good job when it came to driving the truck around the corner of the house so that I could pull it out through the gate, but that's about where my skill ended. The gate was wide open, but instead of driving through the opening in the middle, I proved that avoiding collisions with fences in Cambridge is a lot more difficult of a task than most people would think. I drove right into the fence which is crooked to this day.
