Feeling Comfortable With The Spanish Language

Feeling Comfortable With The Spanish Language

By:

When am I going to feel comfortable with Spanish? That is a question that seems to be asked early and often in the Spanish learning process. As much as I hate this answer, it depends. I don't like it when people say "it dpends", and they never seem to expound on their answer. So, I will make an effort to expound on the answer "it depends" in this context.

It depends upon how much time you can put into the learning process. Obviously, most of us are not able to travel to a foreign country to be completely immersed in the new language and culture. Most of us live very busy lives. What is interesting is that when something is very important to us we can usually make time for that thing. If learning Spanish is something important to you, I suggest that you make it a priority for at least 20 minutes per day.

It depends upon your own personal level of comfortability. Some people will feel comfortable when they really haven't progressed much. Others won't feel comfortable until they are fluent. The problem with feeling comfortable is that it can kill the hunger needed to continue learning. As long as you continue learning, you should feel comfortable and confident after a month or 2 of daily study and practice.

It depends upon the methods you choose for your learning. I suggest that you speak Spanish as much as possible. You should spend an equal or slightly less amount of time listening to native speakers. You should spend the rest of your time reading and writing. If you can find a Spanish-learning software program that integrates all of these, then I think you should consider purchasing that program. Obviously, if you can travel to a foreign country and be completely immersed in the language and culture, then you should do that. There is no method out there that is better than being in a foreign country and learning that language. Also, do not make attending a class once a week the only thing you do.

Feeling comfortable with the Spanish language depends upon your age and learning ability. You can learn a language at any age. You will simply have to work harder at it if you are a bit older in age. Some people seem to have a knack for learning languages, and others learn with a little bit more work. Avoid comparing yourself to others and driving yourself crazy. Learn from others, but learn at your own pace and achieve your own goals.
