FEEDING THE ADD BRAIN
Think about the foods you and your kids eat. Fruit Roll-Ups. Macaroni and cheese. Lucky Charms Cereal. Soft drinks. What do all of these and just about everything we eat have in common? Artificial dyes are in the majority of foods available. These colorings make food look more appetizing, at least psychologically.
There has been claims of possible connection between food dyes and ADD. Though this has not been fully acknowledge, calls for the United States to ban artificial food dyes have emerged. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has a very strong view on this and they have even requested for the FDS to do so.

There is no hard evidence that links ADD to food but many a times parents with kids suffering from ADD has experience positive effects when they try cutting down food with artificial coloring and other non-natural chemicals. With this development it is hard to deny the claims made by some on link between artificial preservatives and ADD.

Neurotoxins that are found everywhere even in foods have very negative side effect on the brain. It can result to violent or aggressive behavior. For more information on this, check out www.foodnews.org.

The first step you should take in managing ADD is to manage what goes into your system. This includes protecting yourself from over consuming food that contains artificial colorings. One should go for food that will bring benefit to the body.

You could start with keeping a log of what you and your family is eating. Once you have some sort of baseline, you could keep track of the symptoms that appear soon after eating. For example, if your daughter has a habit of eating Fruit Loops every morning, and soon after becomes explosive, try taking the food away, but its replacement may be just as bad as the cereal. What you will find is that an ADD diet is nearly impossible youd have to get rid of just about any food around!

It is a known fact that medication works by manipulating the brain. Cutting down on harmful food however is thought to cure the brain of the harmful substance that is feeding it. It is often found that eating good healthy food and taking natural or herbal remedies has help a lot in reducing ADD symptoms.

There are the type of nutrients those suffering ADD are usually short of:
- B vitamins
- Tyrosine
- Zinc
- Iron
- 5-HTP
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- DHA

Certain product can help in feeding the brains neurotransmitters. A good multivitamin, preferably in liquid form that absorbs better can also be taken. One product to consider is -be-Calm this has quite a positive effect on taming ADD symptoms. (www.Neu-be-calm.com).

Food with low glycemic index is a good type of food that can be introduced to your childs diet. Gylcemic index is calculated ability to process sugar from the food, as the body has no way of knowing if the food processed is high or low in sugar. It is then advisable to take food that have low glycemic index so that the body processes the sugar slowly. This in turn will lead you to choose foods that are low in sugar, whole grain and replacing artificial sweetness with natural one.
- Whole grains, fruits and veggies
- Cultured dairy foods or non-dairy sources of calcium
- Wholesome protein sources such as free range meats, poultry, and legumes
- No hydrogenated oil or deep fired oils instead use fish oil supplements, flax oil, etc.
- Water, water, water believe it or not, most of our kids are dehydrated!

When we start implementing good eating habit and avoiding food that introduces harmful substance to the body and brain, dont expect to see the positive side effect overnight. One needs careful observation and persistence in order to really make this work. You will soon see that a well balance diet will not only benefit those with ADD but the whole family too.
