Federal Way Chiropractic, Tracing The History Of An Effective Method Of Therapy

A central pillar in the Federal Way chiropractic philosophy is the prominence given the concept of proactive approaches to health care provision. Patients are encouraged to condition their bodies to optimal conditions that means the will not need specialist advice only when their bodies develop complications.

The human body has innate mechanisms for ensuring optimal functionality of all its parts and systems. Standard medical care puts great premium on application of medication and surgery to cure ills. This approach usually ignores the body's own defense and immune mechanisms.

While this concept may sound like a radical approach to medical practice, it is anything but. As much far as recorded history about human societies can be traced, there is evidence of physical manipulation of the body for curative purposes. From ancient civilizations in Babylon, Egypt, and Maya the findings are consistent.

The Greek philosopher Hippocrates published a book that contained wide ranging recommendations on how to perform physical manipulations as curative tactics. He was particular with instructions about how spinal column manipulation is vital in health care.

The modern practice of chiropractic was pioneered in 1895 by a physician named Daniel David Palmer. In that year, he managed to cure a patient with hearing loss after performing a series of neck area stimulation. A couple of years later he had founded a college to teach the new concept in medical care.

The mainstream medical practitioners did not embrace this new school of thought and mounted a spirited attack. Palmer was even jailed on account of his teaching and practice. This did not stop his son from carrying on his work and research. Today there is a definite philosophy founded on sound scientific methodology that guides the practice.

The profession has had to fight opposition from the American Medical Association for almost the entire twentieth century. While the opposition was greatest in the 1940s, things came to a head in the 1980s when a landmark ruling was made in favor of chiropractors. The court found AMA guilty of a conspiracy to destroy the now much developed profession. Since then, mutual trust and respect has been restored and allowed the field to gain acceptance.

What mainly differentiates chiropractors from other medical caregivers is their specialization. A chiropractor is trained to diagnose and provide relief from a range of problems caused by what is called vertebral subluxation. The term is used to refer to dislocation of a bone in the spinal column causing pain or organ malfunction.

The term adjustment is used in reference to physical manipulations used to adjust the dislocated bones back to their place and thereby provide relief from pain and discomfiture. Patients are sometimes startled by a cracking sound that almost invariably results from a session of adjustment. There is no need to worry about it as it only indicates some gas popping out as the bones move back into position.

To ensure complete recovery, several adjustments may be necessary over a length of time. This may need to be coupled with other physical therapy methods as massages as well as muscle strengthening exercises.
