Fear Of Sleep: Stopping Panic Attacks

By:

Disturbing and out of the blue panic attacks during sleep can occur in people who suffer from anxiety disorders. Being asleep makes it practically impossible in stopping panic attacks. But there are some simple steps you can take to reduce the occurrence of night attacks and improve the quality of sleep. Of course, more importantly, medical advice from a qualified physician should be your first step in controlling panic attacks.

Most individuals wouldn't give a second thought about sleep, but it can sometime need attention, particularly when experiencing poor sleep. Following a good sleep routine and keeping a comfortable sleep setting can positively affect sleep. This means for example, sleeping in a comfortable environment and not working late on a project, or drinking caffeinated drinks an hour away from bedtime.

You should avoid having a television set in the bedroom. Watching TV is highly stimulating for the mind and body. TV shows can contain strong language and violence that can affect sleep. Any activity that makes you restless or hyper afterwards is best avoided.

Sleep panic attacks can make sleep an unpleasant time that can become associated with fear and dread. Your bed is supposed to be for sex and sleep, it is not for work, watching TV or eating in. If you learn to associate your bed with wakefulness, you will inevitably find it more difficult to fall asleep in.

Pay attention to creating a comfy and supportive sleep environment and bed. Old, worn out mattresses can be revived at a low-cost with the use a mattress topper. You also need a good pillow that's right for you, and is both comfortable and supportive of your neck and head. A pillow that's too low or too high can cause neck pains and restless sleep.

Sleep will be more restful if you are both relaxed physically and mentally. Too cold or hot nights can affect sleep, so make sure you have a proper duvet. You can buy duvet sets which come in two parts a thinner and a medium duvet. During the summer, you can use the thinner set, and as it gets cooler you can use the heavier one or combine the two. Of course, if you are perfectly fine with your set, then don't worry about getting a new one. What you want to achieve is a comfortable and peaceful place for you to sleep.

The bedroom itself needs attention, if it's too noisy, not dark enough or too warm it can adversely affect your sleep. Preventing noise isn't always easy, since it can come from outside such as a busy road. If you have a snoring partner, they can seek medical advice or wear a nose strip which increases airflow and generally reduces snoring.

Alternatively, you can wear headphones or reusable earplugs that can be purchased cheaply and can be effective at blocking out noise. Some people may find that listening to calming music helps them to sleep and blocks out any external distractions. If the cause of the noise is for example a noisy clock, it's probably best to move it into another room.

Keeping your bedroom both fresh and tidy will help relax your mind at bedtime. Make sure to tidy it a little everyday to avoid messy and clutter. Having lots of junk around can unease the mind. You will be surprised at how inviting and relaxing a tidy room can be.
