Favourite Easy Winter Walks In The Lake District

By:

The Lake District is based in the North West of England, spanning from just north of Manchester in Lancashire to south of Carlisle in Cumbria. There are hundreds of mountain, hill and lake walks taking in some stunning views. Though of course the walks get more challenging in the winter months and some routes are only really suitable for experienced hikers with high levels of fitness. But with the right hiking gear, there are still some wonderful scenery to be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace.

One of the easiest and most stunning walks is around the lovely Tarn Hows in Coniston. You can still enjoy the benefit of being elevated, but without the extra energy to get there as there is a road that leads up to the point where you can leave your car. And then from there you can take in the hill views and walk around the tarn which is only just over one mile in length. In fact you can take in three tarns and enjoy the best of the Lake District with not too much exertion.

High Dam over the tourist hot spot Windermere is also another highly recommended manageable route. The dam was constructed in the heyday of the Lancashire textile boom. If you head for the small village of Finsthwaite you should find a car park, the ideal starting point for this very do-able stroll through deciduous woods and a wonderful panoramic view of a tree-lined tarn.

Another highly recommended walk that is fairly short and not too demanding, would be Hoad Monument at Ulverston. Resplendent with stunning views, this vantage point overlooks the market town of Ulverston and you can also see the sands at the seaside of Morecambe Bay. The walk is easily do able from the town centre, on a manageable well-laid path to the 400 ft landmark.

So you do not have to hike for many miles up and down the highest mountains England has to offer. You can still enjoy some stunning views on these easier and shorter routes, making it more accessible and family friendly in the shorter winter daylight hours and in probably arduous winter conditions such as snow, sleet, gales and low temperatures which can be perilous and challenging. Waterproof clothing is essential- breathable waterproof jackets and Sprayway All Day Rain Pants are particularly popular. Of course it is still crucial to check the weather conditions before setting off and be sure to equip yourself with all the necessary and recommended hiking gear and mountain equipment.
