Fat Loss Diet And Trans Fats - Which Are Good For You?

On October 2, 2008, Burger King came out with an announcement that stated that they were cooking with all trans-fat free cooking oils, and that this was true at all its restaurants in the United States. They also stated that as of November 1, 2008, they all of their items on the menu would have zero grams of trans fat in their ingredients. So what are trans fats and what does that mean for you, especially if you are trying to lose weight?

To begin with, there are two kinds of trans fats. There are good trans fats and there are bad trans fats. Trans fats are actually fats made by man. When you mix hydrogen gas with oil, you have what is known as hydrogenated oil or what is also known as trans fats. These man-made oils or hydrogenated oils are manufactured using a chemical solvents combined with a lot of heat and pressure. The substance created is then bleached and deodorized. Over the last several years, these substances were added to our processed foods and many fast food restaurant chains cooked their food in these oils. The food manufacturers started processing food with oils in an attempt to help preserve the food.

Unfortunately, these oils do a lot of damage to our bodies. Cholesterol levels were high, which can lead to blocked arteries and heart problems as well as diabetes and possibly some cancers. These oils have been found to cause a lot of swelling or inflammation within our bodies. As scientists have found how damage these oil can cause, little by little, many countries have not just stopped the use of these oils, but have actually banned their use in food manufacturing.

The second type of fat is what we will call the good trans fat. These are what we call natural fats, in that man does not make these trans fats, but they are produced in the stomach of various animals. Once the trans fats are produced they end up in the fat stores of the different animals. The fat that is in these animals can provide these good natural trans fats to human beings. Various studies have shown that these trans fats have been helpful when trying to lose weight and also when trying to build up your muscles.

However, keep in mind that as companies are starting to phase out the use of hydrogenated oils in processed foods, they are replacing them, in most instances, with highly refined polyunsaturated oils. These are still heavily processed oils using high heat, solvents, deodorizers, and bleaching agents. Even refined oils are known to produce inflammation in your body...a far cry from natural sources of healthy fats.

The one thing to be aware of is that the way that the cattle are fed and the type of diet that they are fed can have a great affect on the amount of good trans fats that are produced. The quantity of the fats in cattle or animals that feed off the land or feed off of the grass is much high than those that feed off of a grain and soy diet.

Products that you purchase at the grocery stores now have a listing of the grams of trans fat. Go to the meat or dairy counter and pick up a package of meat or a carton of milk, and find the quantity of trans fat on there. You can be pretty sure that the trans fat listed here is the good fat. If you find this amount on other processed foods, you are getting a listing of the bad trans fat. This is the kind of trans fat that is not good for you and you want to do your best not to include it in your diet.
