Fat Camp: How Is It Really Different From A Weight Camp?

By:

The moment I have heard of the words fat camp I associated it in a very negative way. I envisioned a camp full of people with obesity problems, exercising and sweating their way towards weight loss. That was not such a pretty vision. If I was the one having obesity problems, I would probably be scared stiff of enrolling in a camp like that. From what I have learned, a fat camp is a place where kids and teens are sent off to lose weight. It is a place that promises immediate results over a typical two-month course on weight. I imagine that course involves a lot of rigorous exercises. The thing is, just the phrase where kids and teens are sent off usually implies that going to these camps is not something that these kids are likely to be willingly compliant. That alone makes me doubt the real effectiveness of a fat camp.

Fat camp: a stricter version of a weight camp or merely a slang term?

With the research I have subject, the data that I find quite confusing is whether a fat camp is really different from a weight camp or if it is merely a slang term used to identify a weight camp. If it is the former, I would gladly choose a weight camp over a fat camp, if what if I have read on both is to be believed. From what I have read, because of their inclination towards speedy weight loss results, a fat camp usually employs military-like exercises and methods for its enrollees. If I try to imagine myself being in that position, I would probably not find it in myself to be excited about losing weight even if that was what I had initially hoped for.

I believe that willingness and determination are two of the major factors that allow people to do whatever it is they want to do, the keyword being want. As much as it may sound cliche, people do have to want to change before change can take place. This is similar to losing weight. If a particular person does not find the willingness and determination to participate in the process of weight loss, whatever change a fat camp may bring about physically will probably not last long. In my opinion, if the changes cannot be defined in terms of the long-run, then the purpose of enrollment in such a camp in the first place would be defeated.

Now if the term fat camp is merely a slang term for a weight camp, I feel that the term would not be very effective in boosting enrollment in such a camp. I believe in diplomacy, and any derogatory reference to an issue that is already sensitive would most likely cause people who have that particular problem to express grudging regard towards such a weight loss place. If we base it on terms, there is no contest that a weight loss camp is definitely more encouraging than a fat camp.

In whichever angle I try to see it, I find myself preferring a weight loss camp to a fat camp every time.
