Faq On Car Tires To Help With Your Safety

By:

This information is specific to tires used by folks driving on a daily basis. This includes some information that may not be that well known.

#1 Your car will have to work harder if your tires are not properly inflated. There is an increase in friction between the road and the tire when the tire pressure is too low. This is due to more of the tire's surface area touching the road. Your tires could be subject to overheating or will simply need to be replaced much more quickly.

#2 Tire rotation? Should you switch front to back or side to side. If you have radial tires on your car they can be switched from side to side as they are rotated. On the other hand, you should only rotate from front to back if you have bias ply tires.

#3 P rated tires are usually used on four wheel drive trucks according to the manufacturer. There are some companies that will put light truck or LT tires on four wheel drive trucks and SUVS. This is not common practice.

#4 If your tires squeal when you go around corner, your pressure is probably too low.

#5 Your tire will usually not look flat even if half of its pressure has been lost.

#6 The U.S. government is not responsible for testing tires. Tire manufacturers actually conduct tests and determine ratings regarding temperature resistance, tread wear, and traction. The ratings from tire to tire are not determined by an objective party. So, keep this in mind when shopping. There is no formula to convert the manufacturers grades into a universal system for the consumer.

#7 You can lose up to 3% on gas mileage if your tires are not properly inflated.

#8 A caveat when shopping, you should never be convinced to purchase tires that have a lower load index than the tires your car came with.

#9 If you purchase two tires as opposed to four, they should go in the rear of your vehicle. If you put the new tires on the front of the car, you may find that your car is more prone to fishtailing and over steering. Your safest bet is to place the new tires in the back.

#10 A penny can help you to see if your tread is the right height. Place the head of Abraham Lincoln on the penny into the groove of your tire. Your tires are fine if the tread covers part of Abe's head. You will need to shop for new tires if you can see all of President Lincoln's head. You absolutely have to replace your tires if the tread is down to 1/16 of an inch.

#11 A tire that has T on its sidewall indicates that it is a temporary tire.

#12 The maximum pressure for your tire is printed on the side of the tire itself and it is usually much higher than the recommended tire pressure. You can usually find the recommended amount of pressure on the door of your gas tank, your glove compartment, or your driver's door. Take a look at your owner's manual to find out where the info is located and to get your proper tire pressure.
