By:

The list of celebrities who have spent some time in rehab due to drug and alcohol abuse is long and varied. It seems every walk of public life is represented in those that have checked themselves in for therapy as well as by those who have been forcibly order by the State to get some help. While the list of people listed below is by no means exhaustive it will provide the reader with a general overview of those who have spent some time trying to overcome their addictions to substance and drink.

Politicians who have been to Rehab

The most famous Rehab attendee would have to be Betty Ford. The wife of Gerald Ford could be crowned as the first lady of rehab as her public confessions of abuse have given many the strength to seek help. In fact, many have sought help in one of the many Betty Ford Clinics that bear her name. A slew of Kennedy family members have found themselves in rehab, including both Ted Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy Junior. Former Vice President Dick Cheney checked in for awhile as did, Jenna Bush, the daughter of President George W. Bush.

Musicians that have been to Rehab

Pages could be filled with the list of the musically inclined that have checked themselves into a rehab to deal with addictions to everything from pain pills to heroine. Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead did numerous stints in a Betty Ford Clinic to overcome his reliance on a powerful form of Persian heroine known as China White. Ozzy Osbourne checked in numerous times for alcohol abuse as well as once after allegedly taking LSD everyday for an entire year. More recently, the late Amy Winehouse made a career and hit song out of her trials and tribulations with rehab and substance only to succumb to her addictions at the age of 27. Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and Judy Collins all did some time in a rehab as well.

Actors and Comedians that have been to Rehab

The other popular set of perpetual rehab inhabitants includes actors and actresses as well as comedians. Lenny Bruce and Chevy Chase checked in, as well as Johnny Depp and Mary Tyler Moore. Elizabeth Taylor and Samuel L. Jackson did time in a rehab as did Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Richard Dreyfuss. Keeping in line with those who have made a career out of being a substance abuser, Charlie Sheen has recently taken his battles with rehab and addiction to a whole new level of public entertainment with his amusing YouTube videos, where he brags about the size of cocaine rocks that he snorts on a daily basis. Drew Barrymore and Winona Ryder also kept their stars in the public eye through their very public trials with rehab and addiction
