There is a huge trade of camels that happens in this fair and that is why it is also known as Pushkar camel fair. The fair is held on the banks of the popular and sacred Pushkar Lake. It is celebrated from the Kartik ekadashi to Kartik Poornima, the full moon day of Kartik in Hindu calendar. Though it is more popularly called as the camel fair, but the trade of other domestic animals such as cattles, dogs, sheeps and goats also happen. Tourists from all over the globe tread this beautiful city to participate in this celebration and hot-air ballooning just adds an extra zing to the ambience of this marvellous fair.

There are several reasons behind this fair being so popular. One of the greatest attractions of the event is a huge camel race that starts off the festival which is followed by dance, music, and expositions. Like all other fairs, this event also flaunts its shops of local handicrafts, jewellery, clothes, fabrics, and eatables etc.

One of the specialities of Pushkar is that it is the only place in India with a temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. According to the Hindu mythology, the Pushkar Lake was formed when the Lotus flower fell from the hands of Lord Brahma and found its way to this small town on Earth. Later on Lord Brahma chose the site as the sacred land to perform his Yagna. It is also believed that a holy dip in the Pushkar Lake and a visit to the Temple of Lord Brahma is a must for everyone visiting the place.
