Family Practice Job

Family practice jobs involve administering general medical care to patients. In most cases, family practice jobs require that a physician complete a residency in family medicine after completing four years of medical schools, and one year internship followed by a three residency program. The physician must also study internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, pediatrics, dermatology and often times obstetrics and gynecology. A family practice job means that a practitioner must have extensive knowledge in biology and other sciences, as well as family dynamics courses like psychology, psychiatry and other counseling training. The family practitioner must be able to manage patients and solve problems and oversee the health and well being of all patients in his or her practice.

Family practice jobs involve everything from treating minor ailments to caring for patients who suffer from serious medical program that must be treated on an ongoing basis. The family practitioner generally treats the whole family including men, women and children. Some family practitioners are qualified to perform OB/GYN procedures like delivering babies and general gynecological check-ups. In most cases, a patient presents with a serious problem that a family practitioner cannot handle, he or she will immediately refer that patient to a specialist.

A family practice job require a physician to be Board certified by the American Board of Family Practice. This means that the physician is qualified to see in a family practice job as decided by the Board.

A family practice job is different than a general practice because it requires that a physician has more in depth training in family practice. A family practitioner can treat adults and children and the training required to keep up with any new technologies available in family practice are always available to the family practitioner and are offered throughout his or her career.

Examples of what a family practice job entails includes physical exams, infant and newborn care, some minor outpatient surgeries (like removal of cysts, biopsies, etc.), care of the elderly, cardiology procedures (like stress test), procedures like testing for vision and hearing and child and adult vaccinations, and colonoscopies. A family practice job also involves education to a patient like how to diet, etc.

A family practice job is lucrative for any physician deciding to go into that practice with average incomes between $175,000 to $200,000, depending on the location of the practice. Usually, a family practice physician's salary will increase the longer he or she is in practice. A family practice job usually consists of one family practitioner, but there are some practices that consist of a small group. Some family practitioners choose to be employed by a hospital. Some work for or with insurance companies or other medical facilities. If a family practitioner lives near a medical school or teaching hospital, he or she will teach as well. Those who live in less populated areas will often times make house calls.
