Famed American Poet Emily Dickinson Weighs In On The Hot New Florida Mystery Marlin, Darlin

By:

Amherst, Mass.Garnet Sullivan Live from Florida? Excuse Me! It gives Me the fits! As You may or may not know, I was never Published in my Lifetime. Of course I am Famous Now, but a lot of good it does me. I wrote several Poems about the stinging Rejections I received from Stuffed-Shirt New England Publishers, my favorite being Publication is the Auction of the Mind of Man. And theres another one similar to it with the Great Line How publiclike a Frog. Sour Grapes make a poor Desert for a Poet, and you heard it here first. Anyway, they all thought I was too Shy, too Nervous and too Fragile.

I didnt Write like Anyone Else.I Capitalized Too Muchand Used Too many DashesThats Why I Am Famous Now.

But I do want to say a few Things about Marlin, Darlin and its Unbridled Spirited Heroine Garnet Sullivan. First, I wish I could have been Her instead of Me. She has a Cultivated Sensibility, a certain amount of Reckless Refinement and the Bravery of a Union soldier. Somehow She is able to do All the Things I Always wanted to do, but My Father would never let MeSo Instead I Wrote those Thousands of Poems in Seething Repressed Frustration, stuffed them in my bottom Dresser Drawerand let My Sister Vinny discover an Absolute Treasure of deathless American literature after I went to Heaven. A Poor Substitutein My Estimation, for the Swashbuckling, devil-may-care Life of Reporter Garnet Sullivan and Her take No Prisoners Approach to Journalism in the most Dangerous Regions of the Florida Territory.

Also I think it is Noteworthy that She and I both have/had Thick Auburn HairIts Fiery Red in Some Lightsbut I prefer to call it Auburn. Its a Sign of some Essential Ineffable Quality in a writerbut I dont know what. Heat, perhapsSome kind of Smoldering Ungovernable Energy.

Finally, She and I are/were Both Rapturously Devoted to Our DogsI wrote Poems about taking Carlo to the Beach (I Started Early and Took My Dog among them)But I never really didMy Father wouldnt let Me. Garnet takes her Dog to the Beach twice a Day! She actually Lives near the Beachand Without Her Fatherthe Darling Little Strumpet! And She gets away with Bloody MurderTearing through Swamps, Bogs, Clandestine Sinister Locales, having Trysts, Rendezvous, Late Night Assignations, Discovering Diabolical Plots, Odious MalefactorsIt Makes My Head Swim and Makes Me Want to Stamp My Little FootShe Is as Free as a Bird! She Flies all over Florida in her DashingYellow Convertible with RingoHer Beautiful and so Virile Irish Setter. And She Has a Boyfriend!!!

I Never Got to Have Boyfriends! I had to Make Them UpIts Just Not Fair.
