Pune is a well set industrial city and undoubtedly the fastest growing city in India. Several automobile and Information Technology companies have made Pune their base.

It is the 2nd largest city of the Maharashtra state in India. It is situated in the western portion of India and is roughly 160 kilometers southeast of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. This city is almost 560 meters above the sea level. It exists at the confluence of the rivers Mutha and Mula. The city is supposed to have been in existence back in 937 AD as a small town. The leader of the Maratha Empire named Shivaji resided in this city. During Shivaji's rule, considerable development, and growth of the city took place. In the early 18th century, this city became a noteworthy political hub and also became the seat of the prime minister of the Chhatrapati of Satara and the Peshwa. In the 19th century Pune was seized by the British India, it then became the monsoon capital of the Presidency of Bombay. The title as the monsoon capital continued till the India's independence from the British.

In current times, Pune is now well-known for its state of the art educational facilities. It has more than a hundred educational institutions and about nine universities spread within the area. It is growing industrial hub with quite a lot of automotive and information technology companies setting up their factories in the area.

The name Pune is got from the Saskrit word Puya Nagari which denotes City of Virtue. The earliest mention of this name dates back to 937 AD. It was written on a Rashtrakuta plate made of copper. In this case, the town of Pune is referred to as Punak Vishaya or Punya Vishaya. In the beginning of the 13th century, this city was referred to as Punavadi or Kasbe Pune. The city is often called out as Poona in English but the spelling Pune has became the standard spelling due to the common practice of the locals.

Pune City is often called as The Oxford of the East because of the existence of many educational institutions throughout the area. The city is also called The Detroit of India due to the numerous manufacturing companies, mainly automobile companies located in the city.

Noteworthy museums in Pune include Mahatma Phule Museum, Pune Tribal Museum, Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, The National War Museum and the Babasaheb Ambedkar Museum. In addition, the city has numerous public gardens set in the area, like the Sambhaji Park, Peshwe Park, Kamala Nehru Park, Saras Baug, Shabu Udyan and the Empress Garden as well as the Bund Garden.
