Facts About Hives In Children

By:

Dealing with hives is definitely not a good experience, but trying to calm and treat hives in children could be more stressful. Hives appear as welts on the skin or red or white bumps and could occur either in clusters or individually and could also range from the size of a pinprick to large welts. They could appear anywhere and everywhere and the back, torso and legs are the most common places for hives to begin, however, they could spread quickly to other areas of the body.

Causes of Hives in Children
A hives outbreak has several potential causes and the most common cause behind baby hives or hives in children is contact with an irritant. As the skin of young children is highly sensitive during their young age, several kids could have a contact allergy to certain substances during this period of life. Its a possibility and it doesnt mean that a child would retain the allergy throughout his/her lifetime. Fabric softeners or harsh laundry detergents, new clothing or bedding which has not been pre washed and harsh toiletries such as shampoo, lotion, body wash, etc. are some of the most common contact allergies.

Illness is another very common cause of hives in kids. The body could literally have an allergic response to the infection in the form of hives when a child is ill, particularly with a viral infection. The cause of the hives outbreak is most likely due to illness if the child has a cold or other minor illness. However, you must not confuse hives with the bumps which appear when a child is suffering from chicken pox or another similar illness.

How should Hives be Treated?
Antihistamine medication like Benadryl is a good form of hives treatment, if hives are especially troublesome as they are triggered by the release of histamine in the body. Hives disappear on their own within a few hours in most of the cases. Milk of magnesia as well as calamine lotion could be applied to soothe the itchiness caused by hives.

The key to ensure that hives do not reoccur is to identify the cause behind the outbreak and see to it that the child is kept away from allergens.
