Apart from their appeal, collectable guns can be a profitable long-term investment. Gun collectors from across the globe spend in millions each year, trading, selling, and buying guns. Dedicated collectors are spending thousands, just to travel to places where they can actually experience, touch, and see the guns they want to possess. However, others see this as a risky investment and doubt whether they can get a return. It is advised to pursue this as a hobby rather than a potential investment, as you will be getting the thrill of owning these masterpieces, rather than being worried of returns.

What Makes a Gun a Collectable Item?

Across the world, many people find guns appealing. It may be due to a childhood fascination, a family tradition or certain life events. The real value of collectable guns comes from the significance they hold in the eyes of the person who seeks them. The following reasons can make guns collectable:

Rarity - Certain guns could have been made in small quantities, or the weapon could have been used in an event of historical significance. Guns of limited edition come under this category. There are gun manufacturers who make special edition models to commemorate events of historic importance.

Age of the Gun - As weapons get older they start becoming scarce. When such a weapon is no longer serviceable, it can add value as a display item as well.

Manufacturer, Designer and Design - Particular models of guns gain popularity. One example includes the .44 magnum by Smith and Wesson. The sale of this gun suddenly increased after Clint Eastwood starred in Dirty Harry. Weapons of historical significance would include certain guns manufactured in Harper Ferry depots during the Civil War. For fantasy and historical value of the Wild West, the Remington shotgun is a good example of a collectable gun.

The Right Collectable Guns for a Collection

The type of collectable guns will differ between collections, as this is a personal hobby, and reflect the individual taste and interests of the collector. However, certain collectable guns have a universal appeal.

Incredibly rare guns would be the Freres Rochat Bird Pistols, and only four sets can be found today. One of the sets is in the possession of a private party, whereas the other three are in museums. The last set fetched a sum of $5.8 million at an auction.

MB Associates developed the Gyrojet models in the 1960's for the Vietnam War. However, only the carbine and pistol were developed, and they too did not make it in the mainstream. The common models of this weapon are now sold for more than $1000.

Why a gun becomes a collectible is still a mystery, however collectible guns are appreciated for their legacy, history and artistry.
