Factors When Choosing Carpets

By:

At some point, you might need to purchase a new carpet. With so many choices to decide on, it may seem almost despairing to ascertain which rug to pick out. To make the procedure a little easier, there exists some crucial criteria to think about when selecting rugs.

High Traffic Areas. High-traffic areas are places where people walk the most. Some high-traffic areas that are in the home are usually hallways and the living room. This is vital information to think about because there are some materials that carpets are made out of that will wear out quickly if they are being walked on a lot.

Colors. Darker colors are best for both high-traffic areas as well as carpeting that is going to be put outdoors. This is because, though dark carpets tend to show dust, dirt and soil can't be seen on darker shades. If you prefer to use a light-colored carpet, they are best used in the bedroom. Light colored carpets create a relaxing ambiance, and bedrooms typically aren't used a lot throughout the day, so the carpets won't get dirty quickly.

Underlay. An underlay is the padding that goes under the carpet. Underlays make the carpet more comfortable because it adds a cushion between the carpet and the hard floor. It is necessary to purchase a quality underlay because it protects the carpet from being worn out.

Quality. While it may seem less expensive to purchase cheaper carpeting, it will become more expensive in the long run. Choosing quality carpeting involves checking the thickness of the carpet as well as the material that it is made from. Cheaply made carpets wear out easily, so instead of having a rug that will last for years, you may be purchasing another carpet in the near future to replace the one you have just purchased.

Type of Weave. It is tremendously beneficial to choose a rug that has a tight weave. Tightly woven carpets are of a higher quality, and, therefore, will stand up much better to wear than loosely woven carpets. Carpets with a tight weave may be more expensive than those that are loosely woven, but it is worth paying the extra money in the beginning than having to pay for a new carpet and to have it reinstalled.

Stain Resistance. This is especially helpful in rooms where there is more of a possibility of there being accidental spills. Carpets with little or no stain resistance will absorb the spill and make it impossible to remove.

Ease of Cleaning. No matter how careful you are the carpet is bound to get dirty or get a stain on it. Carpets that have a long pile are harder to clean than carpets with a short pile. Most vacuums can't reach the bottom of long piles, and so the dirt stays in the carpet.

Color Fastness. Color fastness is how well the carpet holds the dye in the material it is made out of. If you try to clean stains and spills from a carpet that isn't color fast, you may also be cleaning the color out of the carpet. It is difficult to keep a carpet looking nice when it is dirty or has different colored spots on it from cleaning.
