Factors That Affects Lake Water Quality: Elevated Phosphorous Load

By:

Several environmental factors have caused many water bodies to be polluted. The continuous progress in our industries is taking its toll in the environment and pollution is at an all-time high.

Our water systems have been the constant victim of pollution and global warming with runoffs, increasing organic waste pile up, algal blooms and turnovers. Due to this, the supply of fresh water is steadily decreasing.

Various lake systems are the most common water bodies that fall victim to pollution. A common issue for lake water quality is phosphorous build-up. Elevated phosphorous levels in the lake can cause algal blooms, fisher"s itch and degraded fisheries.

The leading cause of phosphorous build-up in lakes is due to agricultural runoff. Farmland runoff gets washed into our lake systems with constant heavy rainfall. Its most immediate result is high nutrient buildup which makes the lake water quality suitable for algal bloom.

What contribute to runoffs aside from farmland waste are logging, campfire ashes, and sewage. Commercial developments in areas near the lake are also another significant contributor to this problem.

Furthermore, houses with unmaintained septic systems along with overuse of fresh water also add to the elevation of phosphorous levels. Grey water coming from residential areas that are not disposed of properly into sewage lines seep to the nearest body of water, polluting it.
In the lake itself, motorboats also contribute to the phosphorous load. The more motorboat traffic, the more waste and pollution are dissolved in the water.

In order to cleanse the lake water and improve its quality, the community needs to exert proactive efforts. Local government should monitor farmland practices and irrigation systems. Sewage systems should be well maintained and garbage collection must be organized.

There should be efforts to reduce traffic in the lake by regulating fishing and setting up technical requirements for the quality of boats that go by the lake. Campsites must be at designated areas only and rules and regulations should be implemented for campers to clean after their wastes.

Local governments should also implement innovative techniques to increase the quality of our lake waters. Aerators and enzymes are currently the leading processes when it comes to lake water treatment.
