Once MBA entrance exams are done you begin preparing to face the GD, group discussion. So, what is GD all about?
Most business schools divide the candidates into groups of 5 to 15 members. In some cases a faculty member is present, observing the participants from a vantage point. The topics are sometimes specific to business, but often very general so that participation without much preparation is easy. Participants are given copies of a small write-up on the theme and allowed to take 5 to 10 minutes to mull over it and form thoughts for the discussion.
Then, the group is asked to discuss the issue for a period of 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the group, and preferably come to some conclusions. In some GDs each student is compulsorily offered a minute or two to sum up the proceedings.
What is it that is assessed in a GD? Is it the ability to be heard over and above others? Is it about saying something smart? Is it about carrying several others in the group with you? According to those who have been assessors on group discussions, some of the qualities that are rated high are the ability to think independently, formulate views on an issue in a short time, express precisely and clearly, and argue persuasively.
The evaluators also observe how each of the candidates behaves in a grouphow they respond to others viewpoints, and whether the candidate is reasonably considerate and tolerant of others. A lot of observation is done of the body language of the candidates during discussions. The art of articulation can be developed by aspiring candidates with preparation and practice.
How to prepare? Often coaching institutes teach students to dominate in discussions using lung power and highhandedness, such training only makes GDs an unpleasant shouting match. Such training may not be such a bad idea to get used to discussing in a large group, but you really need to work around who you are and accentuate your strengths rather than just training to speak loudly and get your turn in what seems like an unruly argument. It would be much wiser to focus on expressing ideas and concepts clearly and cogently. Prepare in terms of reading up on contemporary issues. Formulate your thoughts and write down arguments in a logical fashion. Make it a point to read newspapers and stay abreast with current events. All in all, you need to come across as someone who is knowledgeable and logical, and above all sensible.
