Facelift: Look Younger With Surgical Or Non-surgical Procedures

Facelift: Look Younger With Surgical Or Non-surgical Procedures

By:

If the signs of aging are marching across your face making it wrinkle and sag, you're probably thinking it might be time to consider a facelift. But, you've heard through the grapevine that you have more than just the surgical option for reversing the damaging effects of the sun and aging.

There is the traditional facelift as well as several non-surgical treatments that you can get at your local medical or day spa. Here's how these non-surgical treatments stack up to the results of the traditional surgical treatment:

Surgical Procedures:

There are varying degrees of surgery available depending on the results you want and the severity of your condition. The traditional facelift tightens and smoothes the sagging skin on the lower half of your face. It addresses the neck, jaw-line and cheeks. A mid or facelift is just that-it tightens the middle portion of your face-under the eyes and the cheeks.

Now, you only have to do this once and you see the results. You may need other procedures like a brow lift to complete your look. While the results eliminate the signs of aging, over time, your skin will start to feel the effects of aging again. Taking good care of your skin after the surgery and staying healthy is a good way to extend the results of your facelift.

But, these are surgical which requires anesthesia, incisions and the risks that go along with any surgery. There is also a recovery period where you are limited in your activities and may not want to go out in public at all.

Non-surgical Procedures:

Injectables-Known as a liquid facelift, this treatment involves injecting a filler like Poly-L-Lactic acid under the skin which plumps it up and stimulates collagen production. It lifts the sagging skin by filling it and the collagen it promotes improves the skin's elasticity. There may be some swelling, but there is nothing to prevent you from your normal activities.

Lasers-Using lasers to penetrate the deepest layers of the skin is another way of stimulating collagen production and the expansion of existing collagen. This treatment also resurfaces the top layer of skin as well. There may be some discomfort, but there is no down-time involved.

Electric Currents-An electrical current targets skin cells to help repair them and to stimulate collagen as well as some proteins in the skin. You may feel tingling, but the procedure is painless and there is no recovery time.

Heat-This treatment uses heat to penetrate the under layers of the skin and bombards it with heat and energy to stimulate the collagen production. It gets deep down into the dermis and subcutaneous layers which is where the collagen is held. The result is smoother and tighter looking skin. There is no recovery time and the procedure is painless.

While the non-surgical procedures are tempting, to get the lasting results you want, surgery may be necessary. Routine maintenance includes follow-up treatments for the non-surgical treatments. To preserve your surgical facelift results, you just have to take good care of your skin.

Talk to your surgeon, dermatologist or aesthetician about what you expect and they can help you decide which mode of treatment will satisfy your needs. Make sure that whichever procedure you choose, the person performing it is either a board certified plastic surgeon or a licensed professional trained to use the equipment and products. Whichever treatment you choose, remember that aging is inevitable-all you can do is hold off looking old for a while!
