Facebook Poll Shows College Students Need To Study Up On Voip

By:

While typically at the cutting edge of new technologies, many college students don’t have a keen awareness of Voice over IP services, more commonly known as VoIP, which could be costing them hundreds of dollars per year.

A recent Facebook poll of college students 18 to 24 years old and found the 59% of respondents had never even heard of VoIP while another 21% knew what VoIP was but did not currently use a VoIP service. These results are fairly surprising given the many unique features of Internet phone service that could be particularly beneficial to college students.

In most cases, VoIP is significantly cheaper than traditional phone service.  In fact, many price comparisons have shown that most consumers could save nearly 40% on their monthly phone bills by switching to VoIP.

For those consumers that make a high volume of long distance calls, the savings can be even more dramatic.  Internet phone services typically provide free long distance calling within the United States and, in some cases, throughout North America.  This is good news for college students that may make lots of long distance calls to family or friends while they are attending a college or university.

VoIP services use a broadband Internet connection rather than a standard phone jack to make calls it is the perfect solution for college dorm rooms or apartments that may have poor or inconvenient telephone wiring. Many colleges also offer free or discount broadband service for those students that live on campus, which is another cost savings benefit.

Because Voice over IP services only requires a broadband Internet connection to function properly they are much more flexible than traditional phone service.  VoIP service can be transported from location to location without requiring any new equipment or service upgrades.

Additionally, VoIP services such as Vonage allow subscribers to choose a service phone number in almost any area code in the United States. This is great for college students that may want to maintain a phone number in their home area code while at school or vice versa.

Voice over IP services are cheap, easy to use and very flexible.  College students are uniquely positioned to take advantage of these core benefits by making the switch from traditional phone service to VoIP.
