Eyewear, Engineered To Perfection

Eyewear, Engineered To Perfection

By:

Ive always appreciated engineering, from the simplicity of the spoked wheel, to the Millau viaduct in France, great engineering makes life better because it solves problems. But Im in a minority, engineering is overlooked and taken for granted by most people. Amazing, since the human pursuit of bigger, better, faster, stronger, lighter is something most of us are interested in, yet few appreciate the pioneering brains that make it possible.

In 1988, age 14 my eyes were drawn to a striking pair of sun glasses an American school friend had borrowed from his father who worked at the American base just outside our home town - Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

At the time as displayed by the cool kids the only shades to be seen in were poor quality copies of a well known manufacturers plastic shades. Sucked along with a desire to conform few people paid much interest in the americans glasses.

Initially I was drawn to the gleaming chrome frames and the intricate way the different pieces of metal had been seamlessly joined together I later learnt glasses had undergone over 200 manufacturing processes and the neat solder joins I admired were guaranteed for life.

Sometimes its not just how things look, its how they feel, I liked the way in which the arms folded with a reassuring resistance and no lateral play. I decided I had to have them and suggested swapping my pencil case for the glasses. I dont think either of us really knew what we were exchanging, but Im pleased to say I think I came off better.

The glasses came in a tough, blue plastic pouch which was deeply embossed with lettering mentioning Randolph Engineering and a US Armed forces contract number. It turned out Id acquired a pair of Randolph Engineering Aviators, the preferred eyewear of the US Armed Forces since 1982.

This was for the simple reason that because the two engineers who founded Randolph Engineering produce eyewear that performs when it really matters, in the cockpit of the worlds most advanced fighter planes.

The UV protection, lack of glare and overall quality of Randolph Aviators are over-engineered for mere commuters like me, but I find it reassuring to know my eyewear has been tested and approved by Uncle Sams military elite.

As well as looking superb I still have that same pair of glasses some 23 years later. They are showing no signs of giving up a testament to the build quality.
Like all good design, Randolph Aviators have stood the test of time and are available in the UK from The Mandon Store. Details of the full range of Randolph Eyewear can be found at www.themandonstore.com
