Eye Tests Performed To Detect Nearsightedness, Farsightedness, And Astigmatism

By:

Three of the most common vision problems are nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. As these are all common eye conditions, optometrists and ophthalmologists have developed a number of different ways to detect these vision problems and measure the degree to which they affect a patient. Some of the common tests for detecting and diagnosing each of these eye conditions is covered below.

EYE TESTING FOR NEARSIGHTEDNESS, FARSIGHTEDNESS, AND ASTIGMATISM
Nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can be detected in eye exams using a variety of different techniques and instruments. One of the first tests may involve the reading of an eye chart, such as a Snellen chart (the one with the lone, large capital E as the first line). An ophthalmoscope may also be used in the early part of the eye exam, which allows the doctor to examine the interior structures of the eye.

A retinoscope or an autorefractor can also be used to determine the degree of refractive error a patient is experiencing. A retinoscope shines a light into a patients eye, allowing the doctor to observe the reflection off of the patients retina. An autorefractor is used to measure the amount of refractive error that a patient is experiencing. The autorefractor does this by measuring how light is altered as it enters a patients eye. A keratometer (also known as an ophthalmometer) may also be used during the eye exam in order to measure the curvature of a patients cornea.

EYE TESTING FOR CORRECTIVE LENSES
If corrective lenses are required to address a patients nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, the eye doctor will then utilize a phoropter. This device is a standard of many optometrist or ophthalmologist offices. This is the large contraption that is moved over ones face, allowing the patient to look through various lenses. The doctor will move through various lens options, asking the patient which numbered lens provides better vision while looking at an eye chart (such as a Snellen chart).

Regardless what eye condition one has, it is important to have regular eye exams to help prevent further deterioration of vision or discomfort and hardship in daily life.
