Eye Testing For Infants And Young Children

By:

While eyes exams for infants and very young children are by no means as sophisticated as eye exams for adolescents and adults, they are no less important. In fact, early eye exams or you newborns or young children are highly recommended to help prevented serious eye conditions in the future. Below are a few things to consider regarding eye exams for very young children.

Your childs pediatrician will determine a good schedule for regular childhood eye examinations. In general, your childs eyes will be checked every six months to help detect any maladies or conditions that can be stopped or prevented sooner rather than later.

While a baby cannot provide the pediatrician with any verbal or relatively sophisticated feedback regarding eye examinations, the pediatrician can still perform an examination that is similar to an adult eye exam, checking the babys eye muscles, eye movements, eye structure, and eye muscles.

The examination will involve a general assessment of the babys vision, a pupil dilation, and a look inside the babys eyes. During the general vision assessment, the doctor will check the babys pupils, ability to track objects, and if both eyes work in tandem or independently of each other. The doctor can also check if the baby has a serious refractive error. (Most babies are born farsighted though this corrects with time and their eyes grow.) The doctor is able to examine the inside of a babys eyes using an instrument called an ophthalmoscope.

At the end of the examination, the pediatrician will be able to assess and potentially serious eye conditions and will discuss treatment options with you.

Some common vision problems that may be detected in very young children include extreme farsightedness (hyperopia) and lazy eyes. If your baby has a particularly severe case of farsightedness, your baby may be prescribed glasses. It should be noted that if your child is born premature, he or she may run a greater risk of an eye problem, particularly lazy eye.
