Exzema? Eczema? - Explained Right Here

By:

"Eczema" is a word used to describe a wide variety of skin ailments with similar symptoms. Considering the most common symptoms of the different types of eczema, a general definition for eczema would be an inflammatory condition of the skin characterised by redness and severe itching with lesions that are often weepy with the straw coloured liquid that occurs between cells in living tissue. Although scores of people in every country of the world suffer from eczema, few understand what they are suffering from and even worse; how to treat it. One needs to have knowledge about the condition in order to diagnose it. Within this article the causes, symptoms of treatment of eczema will be discussed in simple words so that you can gain a basic understanding of your condition to help you recognise and manage it.

Eczema is an intense reaction of the immune system to certain trigger factors. However, the reason for this abnormal reaction is unclear, therefore the exact cause of eczema is unknown. This immune response causes inflammation of the skin which leads to the unavoidable itching and scratching. The triggers that your immune system reacts to are not the same as those of other eczema sufferers; they vary from person to person. Some of the usual culprits that trigger off eczema include dry skin, detergents, dry climate, climate changes, allergies, soaps, chemicals and off course stress. Stress also plays a major roll in the flaring up and aggravation of eczema.

Any individual can suffer from eczema and the disease is not confined to a certain ago group or gender. It typically starts to manifest during infancy and fades out with ageing. Eczema patients are often very allergic with very sensitive skins and have a family history of eczema.

Because many other skin ailments present with similar symptoms as those of eczema, it can be easily confused for something else and be misdiagnosed and therefore treated incorrectly. The symptoms of eczema initiate with patches of dry, itchy skin. The scratching that results from this itch aggravates the condition and leads to a swollen, weepy rash. From here it becomes crusty and flakey, with possible blistering and bleeding, and, in extreme cases bacterial infection. The more you scratch, the more you itch and so a vicious circle of scratching and itching is created.

The treatment of eczema is mostly focused on managing the symptoms because the exact cause of the condition remains vague. One of the main objectives of eczema treatment is to break or prevent the itch-scratch-itch cycle. The first place for this type of intervention would be to prevent dried out skin and allergies which are major catalysts of an immunological reaction. The former can be done with moisturising creams and emollients, the latter with oral antihistamines. The application of moisturising topical applications is most effective when applied directly after a bath or shower. This ensures that the moisture obtained from the shower is sealed in to the skin.

Oral and topical antihistamines will help control the itch. Should the flare-up not be prevented or controlled with these initial measures, corticosteroid creams of varying potency may be employed for a more aggressive regimen depending on the severity of the flare-up. Topical steroids should be used with discretion in order to prevent unwanted side effect like the thinning and whitening of the skin. In more severe instances oral corticosteroids may be prescribed by your doctor for short periods of time to get the eczema under control.

More modern topical medicines have been developed that act by actually suppressing the immune system to prevent the inflammatory response.

Obviously an important part of the management of eczema revolves around the prevention of it. This can be done by observing the following habits:

1.Maintain a supple and moisturised skin.
2.Reduce perspiration.
3.Avoid things that irritate your skin like strong soaps, chemicals and detergents.
4.Minimise stress.
5.Additional moisturizing in dry, hot weather.
6.Don't wear scratchy and rough materials.

Although much more could be written about the cause, symptoms and treatment of eczema, this should serve as a basic guide to better understand your condition. Because there are varying kinds of eczema, a professional should be consulted to get and accurate diagnosis, successful treatment and drug selection to avoid unwanted side effects and wastage of funds. However, with the basics discussed in this article you would be able start your road to healthy skin by getting the simple things right.
